Kharkiv in danger: “We are evacuating dozens of people every day”

Since last week, Russian troops have been advancing in the area around Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city. Yevgeny Kaplin is chairman of the Ukrainian aid organization Proliska. He and his colleagues save people from the embattled villages – sometimes at the risk of their own lives.

Russian troops captured several villages not far from Kharkiv. How threatening is this for the city?
Russian troops are currently fighting their way from two directions in the Kharkiv region. Another two kilometers and you’ll be in Lipzi. This is a relatively small village, but if the Russians take the place, their artillery will reach Kharkiv again from there. That was the case shortly after the start of the war. The city was under intense shelling at the time.

Do residents fear that a storm is imminent on the city?
It doesn’t look like that at the moment. The Russians don’t have enough soldiers in the region for this. They wouldn’t be able to do that. They advance into the villages with smaller groups.
