Police in Rouen, Normandy, France, shot dead a man who set fire to the synagogue there. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced this via X. As the broadcaster franceinfo reported, the police were alerted early in the morning because smoke was coming from the synagogue. On site, a man approached them with a knife and an iron bar; then one of the police officers fired.
There were no other injuries, but the damage to the synagogue is extensive, as the president of the Jewish community of Rouen, Natacha Ben Haïm, told the broadcaster BFMTV. Many of the furniture were damaged and the walls were black. According to the mayor of Rouen, the man climbed over a garbage can to the first floor of the synagogue and threw an incendiary device there.
