The Basic Law was proclaimed 75 years ago on Thursday. The Federal President invites people to the state ceremony, the federal government to the democracy festival. The federal states have also come up with something.
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law, the prime ministers of the federal states want to promote strengthening democracy in Germany in the coming weeks. The upcoming summer should be a “summer for democracy,” says a call that will be published on the Internet today, as the newspapers of the Funke media group report. In addition to all state heads of government, the first signatories included numerous celebrities. Celebrations, events and discussions are planned throughout the country.
“Now is the time when all democrats can send an unmistakable and lasting signal: The opponents of democracy from within and without have no chance here,” the call says. Democracy and human dignity are the smallest and at the same time the largest common denominator in Germany. “We can discuss and argue about anything and achieve a good result if we meet together on this basis.”
The incumbent President of the Federal Council, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD), is quoted by the Funke newspapers: “It is great luck that today we live in a united Germany in peace, freedom and democracy. To preserve that, is the most important task we have together.”
Federal government strategy paper for strong democracy
The call should be made public at 11 a.m. on the website www.demokratie-liebe.de. The Federal Cabinet also wants to address the issue. A paper called “Together for democracy and against extremism – the federal government’s strategy for a strong, defensive democracy and for an open and diverse society” is to be decided.
Thursday marks the 75th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law. On this day, a state ceremony will take place in Berlin at which Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will give the central speech. The federal government is inviting citizens to a large democracy festival at the weekend around the Chancellery and the Bundestag in Berlin. In the center of the government district there are, among other things, dialogue events, information stands, games, concerts, drama, dance, sports and the opportunity to meet celebrities.
