Parties: Le Pen is open to cooperation with Meloni

“Now is the moment to unite,” said Marine Le Pen. She speaks of a possible alliance with Italy’s Prime Minister in order to gain more influence in the European Parliament.

Less than two weeks before the European elections, French right-wing nationalist Marine Le Pen has raised the possibility of working with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. “Now is the moment to unite,” Le Pen of the Rassemblement National (RN) told the Italian newspaper “Corriere della Sera” at a campaign event in northern France.

“If we succeed, we can become the second largest group in the European Parliament. I think such an opportunity should not be missed,” said Le Pen.

She and Meloni agree on the key issues, the right-wing politician replied when asked what she had to say to the Italian head of government. Cooperation between the two “would be really helpful,” said Le Pen. Both politicians currently belong to two different groups in the European Parliament. The RN belongs to the right-wing ID (Identity and Democracy) group, while Meloni’s ultra-right Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy) belongs to the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).

There was a recent split in the ID group. After massive criticism of statements made by the German AfD’s EU lead candidate, Maximilian Krah, about the SS, the AfD was excluded from the ID group. After Krah’s statements, Le Pen’s RN got the ball rolling. Observers suspect that Le Pen now wants to get closer to Meloni and her fratelli in order to form new alliances in Europe after the split in the ID group.
