Belgium is the first country to sign an agreement to supply Ukraine with 30 fighter jets. There is also a timetable for this.
Belgium has made far-reaching commitments to Ukraine regarding the delivery of F-16 fighter jets and other military aid. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, an agreement on bilateral security cooperation signed in Brussels provides for the handover of F-16s to begin this year and for a total of 30 aircraft to be made available by 2028.
This year alone, Belgium intends to provide military aid worth at least 977 million euros, Zelenskyj said on the sidelines of a meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo in Brussels.
In addition to the delivery of F-16s, Belgium has also promised, according to Zelensky, modern armored vehicles, equipment for air defense, maritime security and mine clearance for the defensive fight against Russia. In addition, the country wants to continue to support the coalition in providing artillery shells and training programs for the Ukrainian armed forces. Politically, Belgium is using the agreement to ensure support for Ukraine’s efforts to join the EU and NATO.
Specific number of fighter jets
At the signing of the agreement, Belgian Prime Minister De Croo said that the Ukrainian president needed the right tools to protect his country’s citizens. Belgium was determined when it came to providing the necessary support. According to Zelensky, Belgium was the first country to pledge a specific number of fighter jets through a security agreement.
The agreement on bilateral security agreements is the result of an initiative by members of the G7 group of western economic powers. They agreed on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania last year that individual states should conclude bilateral agreements with Ukraine in order to guarantee its long-term security. Countries such as Great Britain, Germany and France made a start in January and February. Spain followed suit this Monday.
Negotiations between the US and Ukraine have not yet been concluded. Zelensky recently said that details were still being worked out.
