In the southern Polish highlands, people trust in God, traditions – and money from Brussels. But some feel overwhelmed by the European idea. A visit to Nowy Targ, the capital of the highlands.

Faith in God gives strength to many people, and so it is with Waldemar Wojtaszek. On his right wrist he wears a silver bracelet with the inscription Trust the Lord with all your heart. Book of Proverbs, Proverb 3.5. Wojtaszek’s talisman. When he touches it, he says, his thoughts will flow in the right direction again. Because even if others are rude or impertinent: “You yourself must always remain correct.”
