Arrests: Journalists again arrested in Hong Kong

Around 200 officers are said to have been on duty: In Hong Kong, the police are cracking down on pro-democratic media – now several journalists have again been taken into custody.

Several journalists and former employees of a pro-democracy medium have been arrested again in Hong Kong.

As the local newspaper “South China Morning Post” reported, officials from the national security police arrested the editor-in-chief and five former employees of the online publication “Stand News”, which according to the report is particularly popular with democracy activists.

Among those arrested are the current editor-in-chief Lam Shiu and his predecessor Chung Pui, as well as four former members of the supervisory board. Around 200 officers were involved in the operation, in which the editorial staff of “Stand News” and the houses of the arrested were searched.

In June, the pro-democracy Apple Daily was forcibly shut down in Hong Kong after the tabloid was targeted by the authorities for alleged violations of the so-called security law. Its founder, Jimmy Lai, is in jail.

After sustained demonstrations and calls for more democracy in Hong Kong, the communist leadership in Beijing passed the controversial security law a year and a half ago. The vague wording of the wording of the law makes it easier to take action against activities that China classifies as subversive, separatist, terrorist or conspiratorial – and thus targets critics of the Hong Kong government and the Chinese leadership. More than 100 activists have been arrested or awaiting trial. Many have already been convicted. Many opposition members have fled abroad for fear of prosecution.
