Mexico will soon have a woman at the top, for the first time in the country’s history. Claudia Sheinbaum won the election by a clear margin, with more than 50 percent. She must now redeem this vote of confidence – because the country is sinking into violence, especially against women.
Brenda Saavedra stands on a dusty hill in the border town of Nogales and looks around in all directions. Somewhere to the south lies León, the city she left after men from a drug cartel almost killed her. To the north is the USA, where she wants to find protection from male violence. Around her is the Bella Vista district, where a local gang holds power – 30 armed men, not a single woman.
The single mother has found shelter in a fenced and guarded women’s shelter, the “House of Grace”, run by a nun. “My only security at the moment,” she says.
