Climate protest at the Chancellery: Activists of the last generation write “Be honest!” on the facade of the Chancellery and call on Chancellor Scholz to openly address the climate threat.
Activists from the group Last Generation wrote the words “Be honest!” on the north facade of the Federal Chancellery this morning. According to the Berlin police, nine people were involved in the action. Previously, there had been talk of six participants.
The officers simply took down the personal details of the six men and three women, after which the activists were allowed to leave. The police have launched an investigation into damage to property and violation of the Freedom of Assembly Act.
Saying was removed with a high pressure cleaner
According to a police spokesman, the activists had posters with them, but no meeting had been registered. Two of the activists had painted the slogan on the wall with a brush and black paint. The operation was terminated shortly before 10 a.m. and the slogan was removed with a high-pressure cleaner.
According to the activists, the message was addressed to Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who had made a government statement in the Bundestag on the “current security situation” that morning. In a statement, the Last Generation “fervently” asked the Chancellor to address the fact that the climate catastrophe poses an “acute” threat to security and life.
According to their own statements, the group had already posted the demand on the facade of the Willy Brandt House, where the SPD federal party headquarters is located, on Tuesday and Wednesday. The action was a reaction to the announcement by two hunger strikers that they no longer wanted to drink anything.
Climate activists from the “Starve until you’re honest” campaign have been trying for weeks to use a hunger strike to get Scholz to publicly announce that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is already too high and that there is no CO2 budget left.
