#EP2024: Vote show instead of stargazing: EU election night at a glance

The Netherlands have already voted – now things are getting serious in the other countries. However, the first results will not be available until late Sunday evening – this is due to a certain EU country.

European politicians have been campaigning for weeks. Now comes the grand finale: after television debates and street campaigning across Europe, polling stations are gradually opening.

The Netherlands started yesterday. Next Sunday, things will get serious in Germany and voters can go to the polls.

First estimates around 6.15 p.m.

According to the European Parliament, preliminary results of the election may only be published after 11 p.m., when the last polling stations in Italy close. Until then, the European Parliament will only publish estimates based on pre- and post-election polls.

According to Parliament, the estimates will begin on Sunday evening (9 June) at 6:15 p.m. Then there will be an initial compilation of the national calculations available by then. The first forecast for the distribution of seats in the new Parliament is expected to be announced between 8:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. According to Parliament, it is also based on national estimates and pre-election polls.

The EU Parliament has not yet published a precise timetable for when estimates from which countries can be expected. However, the plan could look similar to that of five years ago. If you go by that, estimates from several countries – such as Germany – can be expected as early as 6 p.m. The first estimates from France would then be expected at around 8 p.m.

The first estimates from Germany are based on surveys after citizens have cast their votes. According to Parliament, the first projections from Germany based on votes actually cast will be published by institutes and television stations from 6:30 p.m.

Preliminary results from 11.15 p.m.

The first provisional results from some EU countries are expected to be published between 11:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. A second forecast for the distribution of seats is also planned for this time. The data will be updated whenever Parliament’s services receive information from the national authorities. The last updated estimate on election night is expected at around 1 a.m. on Monday (10 June).

According to the Federal Returning Officer, a provisional result for Germany will be published in the early hours of 10 June; the final result will therefore be announced on 3 July. After the constitutive session of Parliament on 16 July, according to Parliament information, there will be a final update of the results reflecting the final changes and the composition of the European Parliament.
