Medicine: Analysis: More drugs prescribed than ever before

More and more pills? Based on its own data, the Techniker Krankenkasse has set a new record for the number of prescribed medications. However, there are large regional differences.

According to the Techniker Krankenkasse, doctors prescribed more medication than ever before last year. As the health insurance company announced after evaluating its own data, its employed insured persons were prescribed an average of 275 daily doses – an increase of 2.5 percent compared to the previous year. In 2000, the figure was 201 daily doses. The increase since then is 37 percent.

The widespread disease of high blood pressure is most strongly reflected in the prescriptions. According to the analysis, an average of 105 daily doses were prescribed for medication such as blood pressure lowering drugs. This was followed at a greater distance by drugs for stomach and intestinal complaints and heartburn (37 daily doses) and for the nervous system such as antidepressants (29 daily doses).

According to the health insurance company, there are large differences between the federal states. While Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg prescribed the fewest drugs with just under 250 daily doses, Saarland and Saxony-Anhalt are at the top of the evaluation with 313 and 320 daily doses respectively.

For the survey, the Techniker Krankenkasse evaluated the certificates of incapacity for work of its 5.7 million insured employees.
