European elections: Chrupalla calls election result historic for AfD

According to forecasts, the AfD has become the second strongest party in Germany in the European elections. AfD leader Tino Chrupalla is extremely satisfied: “We achieved a great result.”

AfD leader Tino Chrupalla described his party’s result in the European elections as “historic”. “We achieved a super result and I think that will continue to rise over the course of the evening. So we are not giving up second place today,” said Chrupalla. According to initial forecasts, the AfD was able to increase from 11 to 16 to 16.5 percent compared to the 2019 European elections. AfD co-leader Alice Weidel spoke of a “super result”.

A few months ago, the party was polling at more than 20 percent. The numbers had fallen significantly as a result of the large demonstrations following reports of a right-wing meeting in Potsdam, which was about so-called remigration, and after weeks of negative headlines about AfD top candidate Maximilian Krah and the number two on the AfD list, Petr Bystron. Both of them are talking about possible connections to Russia, and in Krah’s case also to China.
