The wife of former Vice Chancellor Franz Müntefering will no longer run for the Bundestag. After a year full of personal losses, she wants to concentrate on her family.
Michelle Müntefering (44), SPD member of the Bundestag from Herne, does not want to run in the next federal election.
“The last year, in which my husband was seriously ill and my father died very suddenly, was a dramatic one for me and my whole family,” said the wife of the former SPD federal chairman and vice-chancellor Franz Müntefering (84) to the “Tagesspiegel”. According to media reports, her husband had undergone heart surgery last year.
“You can’t make up for the time you’ve spent together, I hope we still have a few years together,” said Michelle Müntefering. She therefore decided around Easter not to run for the Bundestag again. “Because that means being apart for at least half the time.” Müntefering says she plans to continue her work in the Bundestag until the end of the legislative period.
Michelle Müntefering has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013 and was Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Office from 2018 until the end of the last legislative period.
