Coronavirus: Italy, Malta and Canada high-risk areas from Saturday

Spain and Portugal have been high-risk areas for coronavirus since Christmas. Two other popular holiday destinations are now following. For other states, however, the federal government wants to relax the entry restrictions.

The federal government classifies the popular holiday countries Italy and Malta as high-risk areas due to the high number of corona infections from Saturday. This also applies to Canada and San Marino, as the Robert Koch Institute announced on Thursday. Anyone who enters from a high-risk area and is not fully vaccinated or recovered has to be in quarantine for ten days and can only get rid of it with a negative test five days after arrival at the earliest.

Coronavirus: Easing for Great Britain and South Africa

Starting next Tuesday, the federal government wants to relax the entry restrictions for Great Britain, South Africa, Namibia and six other African countries that have been imposed due to the strong spread of the Omikron variant. The nine countries are then to be downgraded from the virus variant area to the high-risk area. However, the RKI would like to point out that changes at short notice are possible.

Significantly stricter entry restrictions apply to virus variant areas than to high-risk areas. Airlines are essentially only allowed to carry German citizens or people living in Germany to Germany from these countries. However, it is not a flight ban, the rule also applies to rail or sea traffic.

There is a two-week quarantine obligation for people arriving from virus variant areas – including those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered. It cannot be shortened by negative tests.

In addition to Great Britain, South Africa and Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are also virus variant areas.
