Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius presents a new model for conscription. His party supports this – and issues a warning.
SPD chairman Lars Klingbeil supports the military service plans of Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, but insists on voluntary service. “It is clear that we have to convince young people to join the Bundeswehr voluntarily,” Klingbeil told the star“The aim now is to make the Bundeswehr an attractive employer. This can be achieved primarily through incentives.”
Pistorius wants to reestablish the registration of those fit for military service, which was suspended 13 years ago, for a new military service model. The SPD politician also wants to oblige young men to fill out a questionnaire about their willingness and ability to serve and to submit to a medical examination if selected. It is also planned to create additional capacities for medical examinations. The SPD politician’s proposal is therefore a first step towards the possible reintroduction of a new military service obligation.
Compulsory military service: Klingbeil sees need in the Bundeswehr
“Pistorius is tackling the personnel problems in the Bundeswehr and clearing up the chaos that countless defense ministers from the Union have left behind over the years,” said Klingbeil. “He has my support in this.” According to Klingbeil, the country must become “capable of defense” again. Russia is waging a brutal war against Ukraine and also against our values. “For this we need a modern Bundeswehr that is well positioned and well equipped.”
We need the best forces “who are prepared” to defend our country, said the SPD leader. “This also means that we as a society must show even more appreciation for our soldiers.”
