Campaign ended: Climate activists call off hunger strike

They wanted to pressure the Chancellor into making a government statement. Now the “Starve until you’re honest” campaign is giving up. And is directing accusations at the media and politicians.

The climate hunger strike in Berlin has ended. This was announced by the campaign “Hunger until you are honest”. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has neither initiated a turnaround in climate protection nor sought dialogue. Therefore, the decision was made to end the campaign. Eight people took part in the hunger strike at different times.

They wanted to persuade Scholz to make a government statement. In it, the SPD politician was to publicly announce that the continued existence of civilization was extremely threatened, that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was already too high and that there was no CO2 budget left, and that radical changes were needed. Now the activists declared: “Instead of telling the truth about the climate crisis, Scholz prefers to talk about combating symptoms.”

Activists also accuse the media of failure

The activist Wolfgang Metzeler-Kick began the action on March 7. He did not eat any solid food for a total of 92 days, his colleague Richard Cluse for 77 days. Other participants began the hunger strike later.

For a long time, the participants drank small amounts of juice alongside other liquids so that they could get some energy. Together with activist Adrian Lack, Metzeler-Kick stopped drinking juice for a while and was hospitalized after collapsing. The 49-year-old postponed a threatened decision to stop drinking liquids last week and started eating again. This was announced as a period of reflection in anticipation of “positive signals from politics.”

Now the activists also accused the media of failure. “The media reported too little and mostly misrepresented the demands,” said Adrian Lack, who, according to the campaign, was on hunger strike for 37 days.
