In Ukraine, the elderly, the sick and babies are still waiting in combat zones near the front. Andreas Tölke wants to save them with his aid organization “Be an Angel”. In doing so, he experiences the Russian bombing terror first hand.
Mr. Tölke, you have just returned from an evacuation mission in the heavily contested eastern Ukraine. How many people were you able to save?
We were in the area around Pokrovsk, a small town about half an hour’s drive from Donetsk. We were able to get 55 people out of three villages and bring them to safe areas. The majority were very old people or women with small children who had held out in this very dangerous area until the very end. They don’t know if they will ever see their homeland again. This is very stressful for everyone, including the people who are carrying out these evacuation operations.
