The death of a police officer following a knife attack in Mannheim has caused horror across the country. A memorial service will be held in Mannheim today to commemorate him.
Before the memorial service for the slain police officer in Mannheim, several hundred of the man’s colleagues took part in a funeral march through Mannheim city center. A police spokeswoman said that around 2,000 people took part in the march, including many police officers but also citizens and relatives of the slain police officer Rouven Laur.
The procession was led by the police motorcycle squad, with two officers carrying a picture of Laur through the city. Firefighters and rescue workers, among others, formed a guard of honor for the procession along the route.
A memorial service for the 29-year-old officer who was killed will take place at the Congress Center Rosengarten from 11 a.m. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) will attend, as will Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) and State Minister of the Interior Thomas Strobl (CDU).
Two weeks ago, a 25-year-old Afghan man injured five participants of a rally by the anti-Islam movement Pax Europa and the police officer with a knife on Mannheim’s market square. The 29-year-old officer later succumbed to his injuries.
