The murder of a young man in England by two twelve-year-olds is reminiscent of a case from the 1990s that made headlines around the world. And raises the question of how the British justice system should deal with such young offenders.
What exactly happened on that cold November evening was something that the criminal court in Nottingham was unable to determine. 19-year-old Shawn Seesahai was walking through a dark park with his friend Derron. Three 12-year-olds were sitting on a bench. At the end, a machete was stuck in Shawn’s back, so deep that it almost came out the front.
The last hours of the life of the young man from the Caribbean, however, are well documented. In Great Britain, camera surveillance in public spaces is regulated much more liberally than in Germany. The path of the two friends Shawn and Derron on the evening of November 14, 2023 can therefore be easily traced in various noisy black-and-white recordings.
