Spain and Portugal have been corona high-risk areas since Christmas. Other popular holiday destinations are now to follow. The federal government is planning to relax a number of other states.
The federal government has classified Italy, Canada and Malta as high-risk areas from Saturday due to the high number of corona infections. This was announced by the Robert Koch Institute.
Anyone who enters from a high-risk area and is not fully vaccinated or recovered has to be in quarantine for ten days and can only get rid of it with a negative test five days after arrival at the earliest. The small state of San Marino in northeast Italy will also become a high-risk area, while the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean will be removed from the risk list.
Associated with the classification is a travel warning from the Federal Foreign Office for unnecessary tourist trips. It makes it easier for tourists to cancel trips that have already been booked free of charge, but it does not mean a travel ban.
Countries and regions with a particularly high risk of infection are classified as high-risk areas. But it is not just the infection numbers that are decisive. Other criteria are the speed at which the virus is spreading, the burden on the health system or a lack of data on the corona situation.
Easements for entry from Great Britain and South Africa
The entry restrictions for the so-called virus variant areas, which currently include Great Britain, South Africa, Namibia and six other African countries, are even stricter than for the high-risk areas. They were classified in this way because of the widespread use of the omicron variant. Next Tuesday, however, they are to be downgraded to a high-risk area again because the Omikron variant is now very widespread across Europe. This also eases the drastic entry restrictions. However, the RKI would like to point out that changes at short notice are possible.
Airlines are essentially only allowed to carry German citizens or people living in Germany to Germany from virus variant areas. The rule also applies to rail or ship traffic. There is a two-week quarantine obligation for people arriving from virus variant areas – including those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered. It cannot be shortened by negative tests. In addition to Great Britain, South Africa and Namibia, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are also virus variant areas.
