CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt has criticized the plans of the Ampel coalition to reallocate billions in loans in the budget as a fatal signal to Europe.
“This is a clear and conscious step from Left-Yellow into a European debt union, into a European liability community,” he told the German Press Agency in Berlin. The action of the SPD, Greens and FDP was “a blatant attempt to introduce a new level of national debt in Europe against any European rules,” warned Dobrindt. The Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Florian Toncar, sharply rejected the criticism.
Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) wants to reallocate 60 billion euros for investments in climate protection and digitization, which were approved as loans to deal with the Corona crisis in 2021, but not drawn. They should be put on the high edge in a climate and transformation fund so that they do not expire, but can be used in the coming years to finance non-corona-related expenses.
Dobrindt announces lawsuit
“I find it irresponsible of the federal government to send a signal of financial fraud to Europe in our neighboring countries,” said Dobrindt. “This will be copied in other European countries and thus endanger the Stability and Growth Pact in Europe.” Here financial policy is being replaced by financial acrobatics. “This means that the traffic light federal government is outside the legal framework.” As soon as the “tricked supplementary budget” is in the law gazette, the Union parliamentary group will file a complaint against it.
State Secretary for Finance Florian Toncar (FDP) told the German Press Agency that the supplementary budget would provide money for overdue investments in climate protection. That is the right answer to the current economic situation. “Both the last federal government and Bavaria have already done something similar.” Unlike the traffic light, Bavaria even used corona loans for the general state budget.
Toncar: “Excessive and non-bourgeois rabble”
“When Alexander Dobrindt speaks of ‘financial fraud’ today in connection with the supplementary budget, it is excessive and unbourgeois rabble.” The CSU should use their upcoming retreat to “find their way back to a constructive demeanor,” said Toncar.
The deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, Achim Post, also reacted with incomprehension: “The supplementary budget ensures that the federal government can continue to crack down on the crisis and its consequences,” he told dpa. He does not understand what this should have to do with an alleged European debt union. “It is more likely that the suspicion arises that the CDU and CSU want to cover up their own lack of ideas by artificially reviving old bogeymen.”
