Hostage takers take several guards hostage in a prison in southern Russia. They call themselves supporters of the terrorist group IS and demand safe passage. In the end, special forces storm the wing.
In Rostov-on-Don, southern Russia, six prisoners with suspected links to the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) were shot dead by police forces during an attempted hostage-taking escape.
The employees who were taken hostage were freed unharmed, the press service of the Russian prison authority told the state news agency Tass.
The escape attempt is said to have begun early in the morning. The prisoners destroyed the barred window of their cell block and thus gained access to the standby rooms. There they are said to have kidnapped the head of operations, among others. The men were armed with knives and other sharpened objects, it was said.
Hostage takers behind bars on terror charges
In return for the release of the hostages, they demanded firearms, an escape vehicle and safe conduct. In a video distributed through the media, one of the hostage takers described himself and his comrades as supporters of the terrorist militia IS. The hostage takers are actually behind bars on terror charges, a spokesman for the security authorities confirmed.
The area was cordoned off over a wide area. Because negotiations failed, a special police unit finally stormed the prison wing, the authorities said. The prisoner escape was therefore limited. In other sectors of the prison, surveillance of the inmates continued uninterrupted, it was said.
