Putin and Biden agreed to continue dialogue after New Year

The presidents of Russia and the United States – Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden during telephone conversations agreed to continue the dialogue in the new year, the assistant to the head of state Yuri Ushakov said after the meeting of the two leaders on December 31.

“The conversation was business-like, meaningful, and the presidents agreed to continue the dialogue after the New Year. They agreed to maintain telephone contact and contact with the respective assistants of the two administrations. The conversation was constructive and became a good background for the talks in Geneva on January 10, ”he said.

The diplomat added that it is still difficult to say how close the parties are to compromise.

“The negotiation process means that we will take into account the considerations of the West. But the main thing is not a compromise, but the provision of security guarantees, which we urgently need, ”Ushakov stressed.

Earlier, Ushakov said that Putin made several visits to convey to his American counterpart the idea that Russia will seek security guarantees in the same way as any other country, including the United States, would do. He added that if the safeguards negotiations are successful, it will lead to the normalization or improvement of bilateral relations.

The telephone talks between the presidents of Russia and the United States precede a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders, said Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov. This conversation became a logical continuation of the talks held in the Russia-US videoconference at the beginning of December.

Russian-American talks on strategic stability and security issues will take place on January 10. Thereafter, on January 12, the issue of European security and the situation in Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council and on January 13 with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. It follows from the documents that the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
