Kosachev saw reason for optimism in the conversation between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States

The hope that 2021 will go down in history as the culmination of all the bad things that could happen remains. This was announced on Friday, December 31, by the vice-speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev.

Thus, he commented on the telephone conversations between Russian Presidents Vladimir Putin and the United States, Joe Biden, which took place on the night of December 31. This conversation became a logical continuation of the talks held in the Russia-US videoconference at the beginning of December.

“On the whole – to use New Year’s terminology – while the champagne glass is more likely half full than half empty. And this remains the hope that the outgoing 2021 will go down in history as the culmination of all the bad things that could have happened – at least in the field of security, ”Kosachev wrote on his Facebook page.

He also noted the insufficient number of details of the night conversation between the presidents of Russia and the United States. However, according to Kosachev, there are enough of them to add a bit of optimism to the current situation.

In particular, as the senator emphasized, a situation could occur in which the conversation would simply not exist. This, according to the vice-speaker, could be a reference to the fact that experts should meet first.

“Finally, in the course of the night conversation, Biden could theoretically already now identify those sections of the Russian proposals that Washington, in principle, refuses to even discuss. This is not the case, the agenda remains comprehensive, ”Kosachev wrote.

Earlier that day, political analyst Dmitry Abzalov said that the most important thing is the very fact of negotiations between the President of Russia and the American leader before the New Year. He also noted that Biden also called his European partners. According to the political scientist, this indicates that the countries are making serious efforts to ensure that the negotiation process took place on January 10.

On December 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry published draft agreements between Russia and the United States and NATO on security guarantees. It follows from the documents that the alliance should refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine and other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later explained that on the basis of Russia’s proposals on security guarantees in the future, agreements on arms control could be reached.

Russian-American talks on strategic stability and security issues will take place on January 10. Thereafter, on January 12, the issue of European security and the situation in Ukraine will be discussed at a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council and on January 13 with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
