The Berlin house where Reiner Haseloff is interviewed housed the artists’ club “Die Möwe” during the GDR era. Heiner Müller, Bert Brecht and Manfred Krug were frequent guests, but Sophia Loren and Klaus Kinski also dropped by.

Today, the representation of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, whose Prime Minister Haseloff has been governing for the CDU for 13 years, is sitting in Luisenstraße. He seems shaken in the conversation about why the AfD was able to become the strongest force in East Germany in the European elections on June 9. Haseloff, who is also head of the East Minister Presidents’ Conference, makes it clear that everything is at stake in September, and not just in the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg.
