Statistics: Population forecast until 2045: Germany is growing

What will Germany look like in around 20 years? A new calculation comes to the conclusion that more people will live in the country – due to immigration. However, there are large regional differences.

According to a new forecast, Germany’s population will increase to 85.5 million people by 2045. This is the assumption of the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) in a recent calculation presented in Bonn. The experts expect an increase of around 800,000 people – or 0.9 percent – compared to 2023.

The institute cited the expected immigration from abroad as the reason. “Without immigration from abroad, Germany’s population would already be significantly lower in 2045 because the number of deaths will far exceed the number of births,” said Peter Jakubowski, head of the Spatial and Urban Development Department at the BBSR, explaining the forecast.

However, there are major regional differences. While economically strong cities, their surrounding areas and many rural regions, particularly in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, will continue to grow, the decline in population in structurally weak areas outside the metropolises will continue, according to the institute. The forecast shows “sometimes completely contradictory challenges” for the regions.
