Baerbock is the most common victim of hate campaigns on social media

The Greens and their top candidate Annalena Baerbock are apparently particularly often affected by disinformation campaigns on the Internet. According to one analysis, by far the most hateful comments focus on the 40-year-old.

According to an analysis by “Spiegel”, the Greens are by far the most frequently affected by hate campaigns and disinformation attacks on social networks. These also relate to other parties, but to a much lesser extent. Even more serious is the difference in the attacks on the respective top candidates, a disproportionately large number of whom were directed against the Green Chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock.

According to its own information, the magazine evaluated almost a million public Facebook comments from 341 extreme right-wing and conspiracy-ideological groups for the analysis. About 50,000 posts were filtered out that would contain potentially criminal hatred. Of these, 174 were directed against the SPD, 265 against the CDU and 1535 against the Greens.

Baerbock also affected by hateful comments

In relation to the top candidates, around 75,000 contributions from the same groups in which those affected were mentioned were examined. Baerbock was attacked in 63,000 of the cases, Union candidate Armin Laschet in 21,000 cases and SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz only in a good 4,000 cases.

However, according to “Spiegel”, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Health Minister Jens Spahn (both CDU) were the target of attacks before Baerbock. However, both do not apply or no longer apply for governance.

Green arguably the main target of Russian and Chinese interference

The Greens are also “the main target of Russian and Chinese attempts to meddle,” quoted the Spiegel as saying the manager of the think tank European Values from Prague, Jakub Janda. He expressed the expectation that such attacks are likely to increase before the election.

According to the magazine, the Federal Ministry of the Interior has also observed that, since Baerbock was nominated as Green Chancellor candidate in April, the Russian state broadcaster RT Deutsch “quickly and repeatedly” made both the candidate and her party’s draft program the subject of rhetorically tightened reporting according to a confidential paper from the Ministry for the interior ministers’ conference in June.

“It is unbelievable how many lies are circulating about us on the net and how much hatred and agitation are against us,” said Greens federal manager Michael Kellner. Especially since the announcement of Baerbock’s candidacy, a “whole new dimension” can be felt.
