Human rights: Anti-discrimination Commissioner presents annual report

Many people experience discrimination on a daily basis because of their appearance, religion or gender. Every year, more and more victims turn to the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency.

The Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Ferda Ataman, criticized an increase in discrimination in society before presenting her annual report. Racism is being expressed more openly, more directly and more harshly, Ataman told the dpa. “We are not only observing a ‘foreigners out’ mood and increasing contempt for humanity when celebrating on Sylt or at folk festivals.”

Migrants, people with disabilities and queer people experienced this very concretely in their everyday lives. Queer refers to people who are not heterosexual or who do not identify with the traditional role model of man and woman. Ataman mentioned discrimination at work or when looking for accommodation. Those affected felt increasingly left alone.

The Commissioner is presenting the annual report of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency today. Since 2006, the Agency has been advising those affected on the basis of the General Equal Treatment Act on how to enforce their rights if they are or have been discriminated against on racial, ethnic, gender or religious grounds, for example. It also obtains statements from the opposing side and mediates amicable settlements.

The total number of inquiries to the anti-discrimination office has continued to increase over the years. In 2022, there were 8,800 inquiries, according to the last annual report. According to reports, record numbers are expected again in this report.
