Belarus is largely isolated in Europe because of its support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Now new sanctions are being imposed on the country.
The EU states have agreed on new sanctions against Russia’s partner country Belarus. As the current Belgian EU Council Presidency announced, these are intended to make it more difficult to circumvent existing sanctions against Russia. The measures are being further strengthened in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it said.
According to the information, agreement on the sanctions package was reached at a meeting of the permanent representatives of the member states to the EU in Brussels. It now only needs to be formalized in a written procedure. Details of the new measures will then also be published.
Belarus is largely isolated in Europe because of its support for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Only Hungary maintains closer contacts with the country from within the EU. There are already far-reaching EU punitive measures against Belarus.
They include export bans on weapons and goods and technologies from the aviation, space and defense industries. In addition, four Belarusian banks were excluded from the Swift financial communications system and a ban on transactions with the Belarusian Central Bank was imposed.
