Dramatic images of an attempted coup against President Luis Arce in Bolivia bring back memories of the dark times of military dictatorships in Latin America. What is behind it? Latin America expert Georg Dufner explains.
In Bolivia, a general, Juan José Zúñiga, attempted a coup. Does this man dream of reviving the dark times of military dictatorships in Latin America?
I don’t think so. Zúñiga is more of a minor figure. It seems that he is a pawn sacrifice and part of a larger game. He himself said that he was asked by President Arce to carry out this coup so that Arce could close ranks behind him.
Do you find this credible?
Yes. Such recipes for political manipulation are well known in governments that are very close to Mr Arce, for example in Venezuela.
