The Pentagon is apparently concerned about an increased terrorist threat to US military facilities in Europe. The reasons for this remain secret.
According to media reports, US military bases in Germany and other European countries are on high alert due to the threat of terrorism. The Pentagon declared the second-highest security level at the bases over the weekend, reported US broadcaster CNN, citing two unnamed government officials. This security level, called Force Protection Condition Charlie, applies when there is an imminent terrorist threat.
“There is credible intelligence pointing to an attack on US bases in the coming week or so,” US broadcaster Fox News quoted a defence official as saying. The Pentagon did not initially respond to inquiries.
The nature of the alleged threat remained unclear. The official quoted by Fox News said, according to the broadcaster, that it was not related to the parliamentary elections in France.
When asked by CNN, the responsible Central Command of the US military (Eucom), based in Stuttgart, did not want to comment on the specific protective measures taken by the armed forces. However, a spokesman said that Eucom constantly examines a variety of factors that are important for the security of the US military abroad. “As part of these efforts, we often take additional measures to ensure the safety of our military personnel,” said the spokesman. Details would not be given.
