She is 87 and has not lost her courage: former President of the Bundestag Süssmuth believes that Germans do not need to be afraid of change.
Rita Süssmuth, the long-time President of the Bundestag, is calling on Germans to look to the future with more courage and energy. Uncertainty and worries have led to anger growing. “This aggressiveness that we have become accustomed to is degrading to human beings,” said the 87-year-old former CDU politician to the “Augsburger Allgemeine” newspaper (Monday). What gives her hope, however, are the people – despite all their weaknesses. “The Germans have always been able to deal with change,” said the former Minister for Family Affairs.
She recalled the time after the Second World War, when “everything was in ruins” but nobody said that it couldn’t be managed. “We are a country that complains a lot – but at the same time also achieves a lot,” she said. People should no longer talk about exhaustion, but about their strength. “And we have a lot of that.”
Süssmuth was Federal Minister for Family Affairs and Health from 1985 to 1988 and then President of the Bundestag for ten years. She recently made her cancer diagnosis public.
