Melis Sekmen, the former Green Party member of the Bundestag from Mannheim, wants to join the CDU. The relevant CDU district association confirmed that an application for admission has already been received. A decision will be made on this at a board meeting on Tuesday evening next week, said district chairman Christian Hötting. However, this is a formality. “Of course we are happy that we as the CDU Mannheim now have a federal political representation again.”
Sekmen is expected to attend the Union parliamentary group meeting in the Bundestag this afternoon. The 30-year-old will attend the routine meetings of the CDU/CSU MPs as a guest, the German Press Agency learned from parliamentary group circles in Berlin.
Change of party in the Bundestag
The Mannheim Green Party district association called on the former MP to give up her mandate. Sekmen announced her resignation from the party and the Green Party parliamentary group on Monday – in the midst of the political disputes between the Union and the Greens before the important state elections in the autumn. The district association was disappointed by this decision.
But Sekmen is not the first MP to switch parties while retaining her Bundestag mandate. Some examples of party changes in the German Bundestag.
