Parliamentary election: France’s most popular singer mobilizes against the right

Many French footballers have already taken a stand against the extreme right in their country. Now France’s best-selling singer is speaking out.

The world’s best-selling French singer Aya Nakamura has called for a blockade of the far right ahead of the final round of the parliamentary elections. “I am well placed to understand and know the place that racism has in our country,” the French-Malian singer wrote on X.

“Now I understand that my position as an artist requires me to speak out because this is an important moment for all of us,” wrote the 29-year-old. “So on Sunday we will all go to the polls and vote against the only extreme that needs to be condemned, because there is only one.”

Nakamura is expected to sing at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris on July 26 at the request of President Emmanuel Macron. Although neither Macron nor the singer have confirmed the possible appearance, severe racist attacks from the far right have followed against the popular singer, who grew up in a Paris suburb.

Numerous French star footballers have also clearly warned against Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National taking power in France, including the captain of the national team, Kylian Mbappé.
