Despite email and other means of communication, fax machines are still used in some places. This has now been abolished in the Bundestag.
Faxing has been a thing of the past in the Bundestag since the beginning of the month: The Bundestag administration has ensured that all work processes and activities for which fax machines were previously used can now be carried out completely digitally, the Bundestag press office said in response to a dpa query. “The fax machines have therefore been dismantled in recent weeks.”
In November last year, the Budget Committee called on the Bundestag administration to remove all fax machines from the Bundestag’s properties by June 30, 2024 at the latest. Individual machines lying around are to be picked up by employees of the IT warehouse in the next few days. However, the Bundestag still has a fax number under which it can be reached for citizen inquiries, for example. The messages will then be digitized accordingly.
The step was long overdue, said the parliamentary manager of the FDP parliamentary group, Torsten Herbst. A modern Bundestag must consistently continue the digitization of communication. “In recent years, visitors have repeatedly been surprised that there are still fax machines in front of the committee meeting rooms.”
