Middle East: Another Hezbollah commander killed in Lebanon

For weeks there have been fears that the conflict between Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Israeli military is escalating. Now another member of the militia has been killed.

The Israeli military says it has killed a Hezbollah commander in Lebanon. He was in charge of a department that was responsible for firing rockets at Israel, the military said. According to Israeli sources, he was one of the “most significant Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon.”

Lebanese security sources said that another person was killed in the drone attack in Hosh near the coastal city of Tyre. According to Hezbollah, it was the commander’s bodyguard. Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of the two people without giving any further details. In response, the militia said it had fired 100 Katyusha rockets at Israeli targets in the Golan Heights.

Israel and the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah have been fighting almost daily since the beginning of the Gaza war. Recently, the intensity of the fighting has increased significantly. There have been deaths on both sides. There are fears that the conflict could escalate. Israel wants Hezbollah to withdraw behind the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the border – as stipulated in a UN resolution. The Iranian-backed militia, in turn, will not stop its attacks until there is a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
