Investigations: Brazil: Bolsonaro allegedly embezzled jewelry

The former president received valuable gifts from Saudi Arabia. He probably wanted to later cash them in the USA. This is not the first investigation against the former head of state.

The Brazilian federal police want to bring the right-wing ex-president Jair Bolsonaro to court for embezzlement. The former head of state (2019-2022) illegally sold jewelry and luxury watches that he received as an official gift in Saudi Arabia during his term of office for his own benefit, the state news agency Agência Brasil reported, citing the police. The Attorney General’s Office must now decide on the basis of the results of the investigation whether to bring charges against Bolsonaro and eleven other suspects and thus follow the recommendation of the federal police.

A delegation from the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy brought back jewelry and watches worth the equivalent of three million euros from a visit to Saudi Arabia in October 2021. According to the federal police, some of the items were later sold in the USA and the profits booked into the suspects’ private accounts. Bolsonaro has always denied the allegations. “The persecution of Bolsonaro is open and shameless,” his son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, also wrote on the news platform X.

A whole series of investigations are underway against Bolsonaro. The police also accuse him of planning a coup together with allies in order to stay in power after his election defeat in October 2022 against the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In addition, according to investigators, he had vaccination certificates forged for himself, family members and employees during the corona pandemic.
