The left-wing alliance wins, the right-wing populists are frustrated – and forming a government remains difficult.
It is the end of a nerve-racking week. In rare unity, French politicians called for a republican front to be formed and for candidates from the “Rassemblement National” (RN) to be voted against in the runoff election. Now it is clear that this firewall against the right has held. The right-wing populists’ seizure of power has failed for the time being. On election Sunday, Jordan Bardella, chairman of the RN, appeared contritely in front of the cameras and criticized the “shameless alliance” that had prevented a “political realignment” in France. Meanwhile, in Paris, this was exactly what was being celebrated exuberantly on the streets.
