International Relations: Indian Prime Minister Modi meets Putin

India’s Prime Minister Modi is visiting Kremlin leader Putin for the first time since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. He will then travel on to Austria

For the first time since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. One of the topics discussed will be Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “We strive to play a supporting role for a peaceful and stable region,” said Modi. He is looking forward to discussing all aspects of bilateral cooperation with his “friend” Putin. A celebratory banquet with Putin is planned for the evening.

The return of Indians from the war against Ukraine will also be discussed, a foreign ministry spokesman in New Delhi said in advance. They were tricked into working for the Russian army under false pretenses. According to estimates, there are around 30 to 45 Indian citizens involved.

Moscow’s media had already reported in recent days that Modi’s trip was a special sign of appreciation for India’s relations with Russia following his re-election. Russia, the major raw materials power, is an important energy supplier for India. The income from the sale of Russian oil, which India receives at a discount due to the Western embargo against Moscow, also enables Putin to continue to finance his war of aggression against Ukraine.

Onward journey to Vienna planned

India remains neutral in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The country maintains good relations with the West and with Russia, where Modi was last in 2019. In the autumn, Russia will also host the summit of the BRICS states (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and other member countries) in the city of Kazan, to which Modi has also been invited.

After his visit to Russia, Modi will travel on to Austria. It is the first time in more than 40 years that an Indian prime minister has visited the country. Modi will be received by President Alexander van der Bellen and Chancellor Karl Nehammer. In Moscow and Vienna, Modi will meet with representatives of the Indian community, as he does on other foreign visits, it was said.
