A defense alliance is celebrating: NATO is turning 75 this year. The official birthday was on April 4th. On this day, 75 years ago, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed. On this occasion, the document was brought from Washington to Brussels for the first time. From July 9th to 11th, a three-day anniversary summit will take place in the US capital, where the 32 NATO states will celebrate themselves and their alliance.
NATO has grown in 75 years
The focus of the meeting is on continuing to support Ukraine in its defensive struggle against Russia. The summit begins in the evening with a banquet at the White House, hosted by US President Joe Biden. Working sessions are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday before NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg presents the results after his last summit in office.
With the founding of NATO, twelve states around the USA pledged their support against the Soviet Union. Founded at the beginning of the Cold War, NATO has developed over the decades into the largest military alliance in the world. And it continues to grow: Finland joined NATO in 2023, followed by Sweden a year later. The Nordic states had applied for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in view of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
