Israel’s army says it is continuing to attack Hamas targets in the city of Gaza in the north of the coastal region. There are also battles elsewhere – and many deaths.
Israel’s army says it is continuing to attack targets in several areas of the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that 16 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured. According to Wafa, six people were killed in an Israeli attack on a building in Gaza City. Rescuers later recovered a small child alive.
According to the report, there were also further, partly deadly attacks on the city in the north of the coastal region. According to the military, the Israeli armed forces have been deployed in the city for several days. The army is continuing its operations in the Shejaiya district in eastern Gaza, among other places. Soldiers “engaged in close combat with terror cells and eliminated more than 150 terrorists,” according to the military. The information provided by both warring parties could not initially be independently verified.
The army had previously announced that it would take action against targets of the Islamist Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in the city of Gaza.
During their most recent operation in Shejaiya, Israeli forces also destroyed six tunnels and booby-trapped buildings, the army said. The tunnels were reportedly around six kilometers long. Control and command centers were set up in some of the complex underground systems. The district is considered a Hamas stronghold. Israel’s military says it sees evidence that Hamas is trying to gain a foothold there again.
The army also continued its operations in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority on Tuesday, at least 50 people were killed in Israeli attacks on targets across the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.
Israel’s army: No evacuation of clinics in combat zones
Wafa reported, citing medical sources, that Israel’s army had forced doctors at Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City to close the clinic. After the area surrounding the clinic came under heavy shelling, all patients and displaced people who were there had to leave the hospital. Israel’s military denied the report.
Civilians were asked to leave the fighting areas of Gaza as a precautionary measure, but the call did not apply to hospitals and medical facilities. The army informed representatives of the Palestinian health system that it was not necessary to evacuate clinics in the area. According to Palestinian sources, several people, including patients, had previously left Al-Ahli Hospital.
