From Washington, Ukrainian President Zelenskyj promises help for the victims of the Russian missile attack. He wants to focus in particular on rebuilding the children’s hospital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the reconstruction of the children’s hospital in Kiev, which was badly damaged in a Russian missile attack. 100 million hryvnia (equivalent to 2.3 million euros) have already been allocated to support the hospital, and a further 300 million hryvnia will follow, said Zelensky in his evening video message – this time from Washington, where the Ukrainian head of state will attend the NATO summit. He thanked all private donors who supported the clinic and promised to help all families whose relatives were killed or injured in the attack.
More than 40 people were killed and well over 100 injured in the missile attack on Ukraine on Monday. The attack on a children’s hospital in Kiev caused international shock. Moscow has since claimed that a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile hit the building, despite video footage which the UN believes shows a direct hit by a Russian missile.
Zelenskyj said in Washington that he would once again fight for the reinforcement of air defense. According to Kiev, the Patriot systems delivered so far are not sufficient for effective protection of major cities. Another issue is getting the promised F-16 fighter jets, Zelenskyj said. He would fight for an increase in the number of units.
With the F-16s, as well as with the Patriot systems, Kiev wants to fight for air supremacy in the Ukrainian skies. So far, this has been on the side of the Russian military, which allows Moscow to attack positions on the front lines as well as cities in the hinterland of Ukraine from the air – with drones, missiles and guided glide bombs that are dropped from the aircraft and have extremely high destructive power.
