In the winter, Nikki Haley didn’t have a good word to say about Donald Trump during the party’s primary campaign. Now the former rival is officially backing the 78-year-old.
Former rival within the party Nikki Haley is throwing her support behind presidential candidate Donald Trump ahead of the Republican Party Convention. The 52-year-old has released the delegate votes she won in the primaries, US media reported, citing Haley’s team. The Republican encouraged the 97 delegates at the party convention next week in Milwaukee to vote for Trump as the presidential candidate.
They can now vote for Trump, but they do not have to. This is a symbolic act, because Trump already reached the Republican threshold of 1,215 delegates in March and does not need the votes.
Nikki Haley supports Donald Trump
The former US ambassador to the United Nations had been fighting a week-long duel with Trump in the Republican primary for the presidential nomination, but had no chance and finally admitted defeat. Immediately after her withdrawal, Haley demonstratively refrained from expressing her support for Trump.
In May, she finally said that she would vote for Trump in the November election. Haley and Trump had heatedly clashed during the primary campaign and had never spoken highly of each other. For some Republicans, Haley, who was considered somewhat more moderate, was a less rhetorically aggressive and younger alternative to the 78-year-old Trump.
Biden vs. Trump: A rematch?
“The nominating convention is a time for Republican unity,” Haley wrote, according to media reports. US President Joe Biden is not capable of serving a second term, and Vice President Kamala Harris would be a “disaster for America,” said Haley. “We need a president who will hold our enemies accountable, secure our border, cancel our debt, and get our economy back on track. I encourage my delegates to support Donald Trump next week in Milwaukee.” She will not attend the convention itself, it was said. Trump had already ruled out making her a candidate for vice president a few weeks ago.
So far, it looks as if the US election campaign will see a repeat of the duel between Trump and Biden, who wants to run again in the election on November 5th and has also secured the necessary delegate votes in his party for his candidacy. After the TV disaster against Trump a week and a half ago, however, a debate has broken out among the Democrats about whether Biden is the right candidate given his advanced age of 81.
