Warning against arms race: Russia’s ambassador in Berlin warns against US weapons

For the first time since the end of the Cold War, long-range US weapons are to be stationed on German territory again from 2026. Russia sees its own security interests in danger and is threatening the West.

Russia’s ambassador to Germany, Sergei Nechaev, is warning the German government of a further deterioration in relations between Moscow and Berlin if the US were to station long-range weapons there from 2026. “It is to be hoped that the German political elites will once again consider whether such a destructive and dangerous step, which contributes neither to the security of the Federal Republic of Germany nor to the European continent as a whole, is advisable. Not to mention the irreparable damage to German-Russian relations,” said Nechaev.

On the sidelines of the NATO summit, the White House and the German government announced that US weapons systems that reach as far as Russia will be stationed in Germany for the first time since the Cold War in 2026. Nechayev said that such a case would lead to further tensions, an arms race and the risk of an uncontrolled confrontation. This could lead to irreversible consequences. Russia will take appropriate measures to respond.

The nuclear power has repeatedly threatened to defend its security interests by any means necessary. Moscow warns of a nuclear counterattack if Russia’s existence is also threatened by conventional weapons.

The reason for the new deployment is the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and Moscow’s overall aggressive behavior towards NATO and EU states.

The Russian ambassador to the USA, Anatoly Antonov, said that the American missile bases on German territory were within Moscow’s reach. He spoke of a “serious mistake by Washington”. “Such extremely destabilising steps are a direct threat to international security and strategic stability,” he said. “I would like to stress that Russian tolerance towards provocations against the security of our country is not unlimited.”

From 2026, Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of well over 2,000 kilometers, SM-6 anti-aircraft missiles and new supersonic weapons are to provide better protection for NATO allies in Europe. However, the planned deployment will begin more than a year after the US presidential election next November; a possible President Donald Trump could reverse it.
