Ukraine at NATO summit: Selenskyj: Conditions for Western weapons must end

Russia’s air force often attacks targets in Ukraine from great distances. At the NATO summit, President Zelenskyj is calling for restrictions on the use of Western weapons to be lifted.

At the NATO summit in Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again called for the lifting of all restrictions on the use of Western weapons against Russian territory. “If we want to win and protect our country, then all these restrictions must be lifted,” stressed the Ukrainian head of state at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. This primarily concerns military bases in the Russian hinterland, from which missile attacks such as those on the capital Kiev on Monday are launched. “If they attacked us and killed our children, it is crazy to ask why we are not allowed to attack this military base,” said Zelensky.

Ukraine is defending itself against the Russian invasion with massive Western support. Several allies have supplied Kiev with rockets and cruise missiles with longer ranges, but have limited their area of operation to Russian areas bordering Ukraine. However, missile attacks like those on Monday are launched from air bases more than 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The cruise missiles provided by Great Britain and France cannot reach these. The US ATACMS missiles fired from rocket launcher systems also only have a range of a good 300 kilometers. However, the Ukrainian army has already attacked these air bases itself with drones of its own production.
