Joe Biden threatens broad call for withdrawal – next days will be “brutal”

For Joe Biden, the air is getting thinner and thinner in the debate about his fitness for office. And now members of the Democrats are apparently also organizing a joint uprising against the incumbent.

Dozens of MPs plan appeal to Biden

As four sources from the party reported to the US broadcaster CBS News on Thursday evening, they expect dozens of Democratic representatives to publish statements within the next 48 hours calling on Biden to give up his candidacy. There is coordinated planning of the action and some of the statements have already been written, two of the informants explained.

The Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives has made it clear to lawmakers that they should voice their opinions, the report continues. One of the sources predicted, according to CBS, that the next three to four days would be “brutal” and that it could become untenable for the president to remain in the race for the White House sometime next week.

So far, more than a dozen Democrats in the House of Representatives and one Democratic senator have publicly called on Biden to abandon his re-election bid, but the president remains committed to running on November 5, insisting he is the “most qualified person” to beat challenger Donald Trump.

The Democrats are in a dilemma: doubts about Biden’s chances of success are spreading more and more within the party, but at the same time the party cannot afford to publicly dismantle its own president. And so far no one wants to do that, because after decades of serving the Democrats and the country, Biden enjoys the utmost respect within his own ranks.

Biden’s political legacy in danger

One of the few arguments that could penetrate the protective circle of Biden’s close advisers and persuade the president to back down is the suggestion that Biden’s behavior could tarnish his political legacy, one of the sources said, if he splits the Democratic Party and reduces its chances of winning the election.

Several sources told CBS that the only two people who could effectively convey this message to Biden would be his sister Valerie or his wife Jill Biden. However, the Democrats cannot rely on them so far. Since the debacle at the TV debate with Donald Trump three weeks ago, Biden’s family has repeatedly and demonstratively supported the 81-year-old.
