Things could hardly be going better for Donald Trump at the moment: While his challenger Joe Biden stumbles from one mishap to the next, the Republican can rely on support from the tech scene.
The Facebook group Meta is lifting the remaining restrictions on former President and Biden challenger Donald Trump. This means that he no longer faces harsher penalties for violating the rules. Trump had already gotten his Facebook and Instagram accounts back in early 2023. At that time, as a repeat offender, he could have been banned again for minor violations of the platform’s rules.
In an update to the then-current issue, Meta pointed out that Trump would soon be officially nominated as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate. And the public has the right to hear from candidates from both parties on the same basis. At the same time, the company emphasized that all rules designed to keep hate speech or insults off the platform continue to apply to all candidates.
Donald Trump banned for storming Capitol
Trump was banned from major online platforms towards the end of his term after his supporters stormed the US Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021. Before the unprecedented events, he had incited his supporters with the baseless claim that he had been deprived of victory in the 2020 presidential election through fraud.
In his online messages before and after the Capitol attack, he openly expressed sympathy for the rioters. The platform operators feared that there could be new violence if Trump was not banned.
The Facebook group had initially banned Trump until further notice. But Meta’s independent supervisory board, which can review decisions on content and accounts, ultimately came to the conclusion that an indefinite ban was not covered by the platform’s rules. It decided that Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram could initially only be blocked for two years – and that the decision would have to be reassessed after that.
Musk showers Trump group with cash donation
Trump will also be pleased about another piece of news: According to a media report, billionaire and Tesla boss Elon Musk has donated money to a group that supports the former US president in the current US presidential election campaign. The “Bloomberg” report cites insiders.
It did not reveal how much money Musk donated, but the amount Musk paid to the group “America PAC” was described as “substantial.”
Political Action Committees or PACS are allowed to collect unlimited donations for political activities, but are not subject to the control of the candidates during the election campaign. According to Bloomberg, the America PAC must disclose its donor list on July 15.
In March, Trump met with Elon Musk and other wealthy donors. Musk then wrote on X that he was not donating money to either of the two candidates for the office of US president. In May, he also denied media reports that there had been discussions about a possible advisory role for him in a renewed Trump presidency. Elon Musk has not yet commented on the matter.
