He once fled to the USA himself. Now Vasquez’s church in Eagle Pass, Texas, is the first port of call for migrants – much to the annoyance of Christian nationalists and Trump supporters.
Pastor Vasquez sits in jeans and sneakers at the entrance of his Lutheran church in the border town of Eagle Pass and prepares for the next clash.
He has experienced a number of clashes recently when it comes to the issue of immigration. First, Texas’ conservative governor Greg Abbott sent his National Guard to Eagle Pass to secure the border and expel Joe Biden’s federal troops.
“I watched the takeover of power on the Rio Grande from close up,” says Vasquez. “Our public park was turned into a military zone. A disgrace.”
