Biden rarely receives public support these days. Now a senator who normally likes to criticize the US president – and who is himself older than Biden – has spoken out
In the debate about Joe Biden’s suitability as a presidential candidate, the 81-year-old has received backing from left-wing politician Bernie Sanders. Even though he disagrees with Biden on many issues, Sanders wrote in an opinion piece published in the New York Times, he believes Biden is the “most effective president” in the country’s modern history. The incumbent is “the strongest candidate to beat Donald Trump – a demagogue and pathological liar.”
Sanders, who is a year older than Biden, blamed the media for the poor perception of Biden. For more than two weeks, they have been “obsessed” with Biden’s botched TV appearance and his mental state. They are “desperately” looking for voices that no longer support Biden – and for neurologists who will give their opinion on television. Unfortunately, too many Democrats have joined the “firing squad.”
“Yes, I know: Mr. Biden is old, prone to faux pas, walks stiffly, and had a disastrous debate with Mr. Trump,” Sanders wrote. “But I also know: A presidential election is not an entertainment contest.” It does not begin or end with a 90-minute debate. Biden may not be the ideal candidate, but he will and should be the candidate – and he can beat Trump.
Biden is currently fighting on all fronts to save his candidacy for the presidential election in November. Several party colleagues have already publicly called on the Democrat to drop out of the race. Sanders is one of three independent senators in the US Congress. However, he usually votes with the Democrats and is therefore considered to be part of their political camp.
