The assassination attempt on Donald Trump is part of a spiral of violence that seems to be accelerating in the United States. Even now, part of the nation refuses to stop.
Anyone who has experienced the election campaign in the USA up close, in sports arenas, at stands, in the conversations among fanatical supporters, has long been unable to avoid the disturbing thought: Something bad is going to happen in this country.
This concern has been felt for some time among committed Republicans and Democrats, on both sides: Let’s hope nothing terrible happens. Let’s hope there is no assassination. Let’s hope there is no civil war.
The mood was already heated during the winter primaries, and has been for months, even years. And not just since Donald Trump began his political career more than ten years ago with the outrageous lie that Barack Obama was not a legitimate president.
